Painter in Frisco Helps With The Popcorn Removal Process

By Nate Kono

Many homes that were built in the 1990's in the Frisco, TX area have popcorn acoustical ceilings. While it seemed a good idea at the time, most people these days cringe when they look at the popcorn today. It is dirty, messy, stains, peels, and needs to go. Most of you know painting is a very affordable way to improve the look and feel of your home, but popcorn removal is even less expensive and makes all the difference in the world.

If you are planning on staying in your home and want to bring it up to date, or are selling and want your home to stand out amongst the rest, then you should consider scraping off the popcorn. Most people have heard that this can be an arduous and messy task. It can be, but if you follow some easy steps, the job can be a lot easier than most people think and the mess can be contained.

Removal of a popcorn ceiling that has been painted is more difficult than if there is no paint on it because unpainted ceilings are wet down and scraped clean whereas a painted ceiling is a bit resistant.

Follow these steps to scrape like a professional:

1. The first step is to remove furniture and completely cover the area to keep the debris confined to a specific area. This is key. Make sure you buy some painters plastic and cover the floor. Then tape and drape plastic on the walls making sure that it overlaps the floor plastic. You can section off 1 room at a time with plastic and work on the rest of the house at your own pace.

2. The second step is to wet the popcorn ceiling with a small water sprayer. The key to removal is to keep the ceiling wet. This will keep dust down tremendously and make scraping a much, much easier process

3. The third step is to carefully scrape away the popcorn without damaging the drywall underneath. Easier said than done, so just plan on a few dings that you will have to repair.

4. The fourth step is to use drywall compound to touch up any areas that need it. Just smooth the mud over the dings and sand when dry.

5. The fifth step is to apply your selected texture by hand. You can rent a spray machine from your local home improvement store and spray a room in a few minutes.

6. The sixth step is to prime and paint the ceiling after the texture is fully dry. And then, of course, clean up.

If you are planning on removing popcorn and painting in Frisco, TX, you can give it a try in one of your smaller rooms by following the steps above. Good luck!
