Home Security and Your Vacation Home

By Mark Mahaffey

If you have a vacation home, then you are probably on the lookout for ways to keep it secure when you are not there. You no doubt find it difficult to implement good home security for a home that you visit infrequently.

Protecting a vacation home from criminals is challenging, because you probably do not stay in the home very much. You need a great security strategy to make sure that your vacation home stays safe and secure when you are not there.

You do have the option of hiring a security guard to keep an eye on your second home. But since he would only go by the house occasionally, the security would not be very effective. You could also hire a house sitter for your home. But paying a house sitter to live at your home for weeks at a time would quickly become very expensive.

The best solution is digital video recording or DVR. DVR is a very effective means of improving the security at your vacation home. DVR allows you to closely monitor your second home, even when you are miles away in another state. And it is much cheaper than hiring security guards and house sitters.

All you need to do is mount cameras inside and outside your home. The feed from these cameras can then be sent to your computer for you to view. You can even have the feed sent to your iPad or your smart phone! And since you can remotely rotate the cameras, you will be able to see any area of your house that you desire, including the exterior.

Just be sure to install cameras that are motion activated. This type of camera will save you money on your electric bill, because they will only turn on if they detect motion. You can turn them on remotely if you choose, but otherwise, they will stay off unless there is something to record.
