Growing Medicinal tomatoes

By Castulo Zane

I've had a bit of experience growing medical tomatoes. The results have varied quite a bit, but I always enjoyed it. Here's my story so far. Growing tomatoes for medical purposes, as most people know, is legal in many countries, including Canada.

I started growing tomatoes for medicinal uses when I was in Grade 8 or 9. I had no idea how to go about it, but I gave it a try. The only hints were from Alexander Sumach's "Grow Your Own Stone". That was a great book. The author looked like a chimp.

I found and planted some seeds and put them in the bedroom closet. That wasn't a great success omen. I didn't know any better. I strung up a100 watt bulb and put some dirt in tomatoes. Then I hoped for the best. Not good.

I gave up for several years. Travel got in the way, including travel to places where growing dope was really illegal. In some countries it is illegal to grow tomatoes for any reason. Getting caught with it was bad enough. Still, the idea never got too far away. However, only do it in Areas where it is legal and safe.

The second time around I was probably even more poorly prepared. I took grow light (the old fashioned kind) and set that up. They don't work well. I set the operation up in a cubbyhole under the stairs. It was destined to fail from the start, and fail it did.

The first two times were set ups without timers or good lights. Tomatoes tech was primitive then, at least the out in the open stuff was. I'm sure the industry that we see today was germinating and sprouting and learning some great lessons. That's how we got to today.

I left town again. The road was a refuge. But, the world is round and I returned. Life started getting busy. My job got a little more serious. About 12 years ago I found myself with a good set up. A basement Hydroponic garden was in the offing perhaps. There was more support Around. I had to try again.

A hydroponic set up was my new toy. Measuring three feet by two and a half it held 6-8 plants. I used fluorescent because they varied the light spectrum. The trick is to put them within an inch of the plant whenever you can.

They flourished. I had no idea that I could garden so well. The box was a self-contained reservoir, with a pump and aerator. The plants grew in a hydro ton/rock wool combination.

Before long I added a 400 watt light. Ventilation and aroma were challenge, but I liked the smell. The plants grew as if they were on steroids. I had no idea I had such a green thumb. I switched them over to a bloom cycle and waited eagerly.

That's when I made the mistake. I got greedy. I bought some bloom boosting spray and exceeded the recommended dosage. That turned the plants into hermaphrodites. I couldn't tell, as a rookie, which were males and which were females. However, the dope was still dope. Unfortunately, legal medical tomatoes need quality control.

After that crop I continued on a small scale for several more cycles. I learned about solutions, ventilation and smell suppression. It was a lot of fun, but I had to end up giving it a rest. Too many people figured out what I was up to. I can't stress the importance of keeping your mouth shut When it comes to growing tomatoes. Even when it's legal people will want to steal your crops.
